Can Technology be Harmful to Society?

Technology is advancing quickly, and it is unimaginable the things that people with even a small amount of technical knowledge can do. Before I explain the concept I will be talking about, please take a look at the following message from Barack Obama.

Did you believe that this clip was really Barack Obama when you first started watching it? It is scary to think about how realistic this clip of our former president seems. Think about if initially, you thought that was really Obama, then when you saw that it was actually Jordan Peele realized that the video seemed off. We can agree that it looked scarily close to being real.

In fact, it is becoming increasingly difficult to spot a Deep Fake video. If you take a look at the video below, you can see this exemplified.

These technologies are undoubtfully innovative, considering the ways technology has improved in the past ten or twenty years. However, this is an extremely powerful tool that can easily be learned by anyone with knowledge of how to use technology. If fallen into the wrong hands, there can potentially be damaging results from these types of videos.

Imagine, for a moment, that someone makes a Deep Fake video of President Trump saying that he is planning to go to war. Imagine the chaos that would cause in our country. The question now is: how can we regulate this tool to avoid these problems?

While the technology is still quite new, the government hasn’t had a chance to act against it. According to an article on Brookings, “research led by professor Siwei Lyu of the University at Albany has shown, face-swapping (editing one person’s face onto another person’s head) creates resolution inconsistencies in the composite image that can be identified using deep learning techniques.” There are ways to spot these Deep Fakes, we just as a society have to be aware and know that seeing may no longer be believing.

If you take a look at the following website, you can interactively look at how these Deepfakes work.

Questions:

1. Do you believe Deep Fakes can be harmful to society?

2. Could you think of other ways that this technology can be used other than in the political race?

3. Where can you see this tool being used for good?

  1. I personally think that Deep Fakes can be harmful. These videos are so easily edited and can put false words in peoples mouths, creating confusion for the public media. Not only can these harm politicians, it can harm movie stars, TV personalities, and all celebrities. However, this technology could also be for positive uses, such as dubbing over important speeches if the speaker messes up. Regardless, I think this technology should be used with precaution.

    1. I really like your comment about how this technology can be used to fix speech messages if there was an error. That is definitely something that I did not think about.

  2. After watching the videos you presented, it's astounding how incredibly similar this technology can copy a face, a powerful face at that! And as you've stated, in the wrong hands, this could bring potential chaos and destruction if seen under a powerful eye. Given how teachable this technology is, I beleive that Deep Fakes would bring more harm than good. Even if it were to be regulated, people could advance it far enough that it would become more difficult to distinguish falseness from reality. There could be many other uses than political statements, such as inspirational speeches, monologues, etc. However, given how much power this type of technology can bring, most would use this for political gain/chaos. Therefore, I believe Deep Fakes would bring more harm than good to society.

    1. Yes, I do agree that this technology can bring more harm than good. However, I know that the technology can save movies money from editing mistakes in post and etc. Our society definitely needs to find a good way to regulate the technology.

  3. Hi! Great post! I too agree with our fellow classmates that technology can sometimes can be more harmful than good. When looking at the idea of Deep Fakes, this statement stands true. There is too much controversy and political statements to which can in turn, become harmful.

    1. Hi Lauren, thank you for the comment. The political controversy makes the Deep Fake technologies extremely valuable to the parties, as they become more and more realistic. I agree with what you said, that it can lead to harmful things in our society.

  4. Hi Ipsita, I had no idea that technology like this existed and find it a little scary! It is crazy that there is technology that can clone a face and have it talk like the actual person would. This can obviously be harmful because there are hackers out there who could imitate someone and say awful things and ruin the reputation of the real person who did not actually say it. I can see how this can especially be used in politics but also see how this could be used in movies for characters or actors that may have died or can't be filmed. If used properly, it could be good for making movies better (and possibly cheaper) but I believe that there are more harmful uses than good!

    1. Hailee, thank you for the comment! Yes, I agree with what you said and how it can be used for movies to replace movie actors that have passed. I also see other ways this tool can be useful, but the harm does outweigh the good. For example, it can be used to catfish people, since the technology is so easy to implement for almost anyone that knows how to use a computer.

  5. I really enjoyed your post! I agree that this type of technology can be harmful to society. In this day of age where everything is being shared across social media platforms, the exposure is increasing exponentially. The videos you referenced looked so real, imagine the amount of people who actually fall for it and it sends the wrong message. Especially in politics, it will be interesting to see how this type of technology will impact the 2020 elections. Thanks for your post!

    1. Hi Dylan, thank you for the comment! I do agree with your comment, it can be harmful to society. Many new technologies can be used in a malicious way, and we need to think about how the tool can affect the general public before we give anyone the ability to use it.

  6. Hello Ipsita! This is a super interesting post! I remember seeing the video of Barack Obama for the first time awhile ago and how I was in complete shock. I did not believe what I heard and saw, but I also did not doubt the message, because it seemed so realistic. This technology is definitely harmful and can cause major disputes if used improperly. If no precaution is taken, viewers of this technology could be deceived and conflicts will arise. Besides political use, this technology could also be used to enhance the film industry like Hailee mentioned above. It will be interesting to see how movies can potentially feature actors who have past away. Child actors' voice could also be dubbed over. Overall, it is fascinating how fast technology advancing.

    1. Hi Hang, thank you for the comment! Yes movies are a big use for this technology. Not only that, it can be used to make fake accounts like catfishing others on the internet. They can send malicious videos and pretend to be someone they are not.
